Who Gets What—Invitations vs. Annoucements Madness Can Be Averted!

The diagram above gives you a general sense of how the whole invitation business works. You will

see that while many people may get a wedding announcement, only a subset of those people will usually receive a wedding invitation. That's because there are lots of people you and your family may want to inform of your upcoming nuptials, but you may not want or expect them all to show up at the church, and you certainly don't want everyone you've ever met at the reception! Wedding announcements go to great-aunts who don't travel, old boyfriends who would get drunk and make a scene, women who once snubbed you but will die of envy when they find out you're getting married, old teachers, and everyone who ever dumped you. Your family may want to send announcements to their friends, and it's a small enough compromise to make them happy in this since they won't be getting their way in the matter of whom to invite.

The diagram shows that the actual wedding invitation overlaps the announcement. Depending on your time frame, you may want to send announcements to everyone you plan to invite, just to give them a heads-up that nuptials will be approaching. Or, if you're rushing towards the altar, you may send out the announcements and the invitations at the same time, in which case, those who are invited to the wedding won't need an announcement.

Generally, people who are invited to the reception are also always invited to the wedding, but it isn't true the other way around. That's why you'll find the reception invitations inside the wedding invitation circle and not overlapping into the announcements in the diagram above. Now, this is flexible: you can certainly send out announcements, wedding invites and reception invites to the same people. There are even some cases where a couple gets married in a small ceremony but invites more people to the reception. If all the people invited to the reception are also invited to the wedding, you can have both invites sent in the same envelope, saving some postage. Just make sure not to mix up your group of people invited only to the wedding with people invited to the ceremony and the reception or you'll wind up partying down with the guy who fixed your sink in college while your best friend sulks at home.
